How Much Internet Speed Do I Need? Streaming, Calls and Gaming

By Gllownite Technology • Published 1 November 2026

For one person, 25 Mbps covers almost everything, including 4K video. A household needs more because everyone shares the connection. Add up what people do at the same time, then leave some room to spare.

Speed needed for each activity

ActivitySpeed neededSource
Netflix HD (720p)3 MbpsNetflix
Netflix Full HD (1080p)5 MbpsNetflix
Netflix 4K15 MbpsNetflix
YouTube 720p2.5 MbpsYouTube
YouTube 1080p5 MbpsYouTube
YouTube 4K20 MbpsYouTube
Zoom group call, 720p2.6 Mbps up / 1.8 Mbps downZoom
Zoom group call, 1080p3.8 Mbps up / 3.0 Mbps downZoom

These are the figures each company publishes, and they are for one stream or one call. Treat them as minimums, because Wi-Fi and other devices will take their share too.

How to size a plan for your household

  1. Picture your busiest time of day, such as a weekday evening.
  2. List what everyone is doing at that moment.
  3. Add up the speeds from the table above.
  4. Add about half as much again for Wi-Fi losses, phones and background updates.

Example: one 4K YouTube stream (20 Mbps), one 1080p Netflix stream (5 Mbps) and one Zoom call (3 Mbps down) add up to 28 Mbps. Adding half again gives 42 Mbps, so a 50 Mbps plan would suit this home. That extra half is our rule of thumb, not an official figure.

Download speed is not the only number

  • Upload speed matters for video calls, sending large files, cloud backups and live streaming.
  • Ping matters for gaming and calls. A fast plan with high ping can still feel laggy. See what counts as a good ping.
  • Faster plans mainly save time on big downloads. Use our download time table to see how much.

Check before you upgrade

Run a speed test at your busiest time. If you are already getting your plan speed and things still buffer, you may need a faster plan. If you are getting far less, a faster plan may not help, so find out why first.

Frequently asked questions

Is 50 Mbps enough for a family?

Often, yes. It can handle a couple of HD or 4K streams plus a video call at the same time. Larger families, or homes that often download big games, may want more.

How many Mbps do I need for 4K?

Netflix recommends 15 Mbps and YouTube recommends 20 Mbps for one 4K stream.
